Laboratory services are an essential part of health care delivery, particularly in tropical countries where simple tests play a major role in the diagnosis and management of common diseases and conditions, in the rational use of essential drugs and in the control of diseases of public health importance. Few opportunities for continuing education of laboratory workers exist in Africa. AMREF offers the following courses in lab management:
Refresher Course in Essential Laboratory Services
With several years of experience in running refresher courses for laboratory workers, AMREF has developed a course designed to assist in the operation of a laboratory at peripheral level. The course is targeted at individuals holding a certificate or diploma in medical laboratory technology, with at least 2 years practical experience. Bench-trained laboratory workers MUST have at least 5 years practical experience. This course aims at strengthening laboratory diagnostic services through practical refresher training on essential laboratory procedures and management practices.
Course Duration: 12 weeks starting between March 5, 2012 - May 25, 2012
Cost: US$ 4,200
US$ 1,800 covers tuition, books, course materials, stationery, photocopies, pupil’s pass, minor health services at the AMREF Staff Clinic and field trips
US$2,400 covers accommodation, food, local travel, living allowance within Nairobi.
Medical Laboratory Practices and Management Course
The Medical Laboratory Practices and Management Course contributes to improved health through competency-based training of Medical Laboratory Supervisors and Managers. Laboratory staff with diploma level training or above with at least two years practical experience, including responsibilities in laboratory management and staff supervision.
Course Duration: The training course involves a minimum 270 hours and a maximum of 570 hours of course work and is conducted in Three Phases:
i. Phase One: A two month pre-training period equivalent to 80 hours of course work. June 4, 2012 – July 23, 2012.
ii. Phase Two: This is a two week residential training period equivalent to 70 hours of course work. August 6, 2012 – August 17, 2012
iii. Phase Three: This is a three month work-based training period equivalent to 120 hours of course work. August 27, 2012 – November 27, 2012
