AMREF is an international African organisation headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. Its mission is to ensure that every African can enjoy the right to good health helping to create vibrant networks of informed communities that work with empowered health care providers in strong health systems.

AMREF has over 50 years experience in health development. In order to strengthen and enhance its operations and to achieve its goals, the organisation is seeking to recruit dynamic, qualified and experienced individuals to the following position:

Independent Director (5 positions)

Further details concerning this position are given below:

Purpose: to advise, govern, oversee policy and strategic direction and assist with the leadership and general promotion of AMREF so as to support the organisation’s mission and fundraising outreach.

Major responsibilities:

  • Leadership, governance and oversight:
    • Provide organisational leadership and advisement on strategic business plan;
    • Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of the organisation’s programs and services;
    • Formulate and oversee policies and procedures;
    • Support financial management, including approving the annual budget, audit reports and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all legal and fiduciary responsibilities;
    • Oversee the implementation of the human resources policies, procedures and best practices;
    • Identify and evaluate the risks to the organisation’s people (clients, staff, management, volunteers), property, finances, goodwill and image and implement measures to control risks;
    • Actively commit time and participation in Board meetings, special events and Board Committees;
    • Represent AMREF to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador and spokesman for the organisation.
  • Fundraising:
    • Review and monitor AMREF’s fundraising strategy and budgets;
    • Help promote a culture of fundraising throughout AMREF;
    • Participate with management and staff of AMREF in fundraising efforts;
    • Support the active solicitation of contribution from foundations, organizations and individuals through established networks;
    • Make an annual contribution that is commensurate with current capacity.

Length of term: Three years, which may be reviewed up to a maximum of two consecutive terms, pending approval of the Board.

Meetings and time commitment:

The applicant should demonstrate commitment to attending various meetings of the Board and also to be committed to the programmes of the Board.

Expectations of Board members:

Apart from commitment to attending meetings and events of the Board, members should be fully committed to the vision and mission of the organisation in all material respects.
